My face is bewildered – eyes wide open, jaw to the floor, and my brain metaphorically exploding in my head – as I stare at the line-up of movies for 2016. THERE. ARE. A. LOT. 2016 is movie buff bliss!
Okay, disclaimer: this is a personal list. What I’m excited about may veer towards a certain genre. If you’re a superhero/comic book/sci fi fanatic like me, then we’re going to get along and you’ll likely agree with the list. If not, take comfort in the fact that I’ll try to mix it up as best I could. Without further ado, here’s the 20 2016 movies I’m most excited about!
20 Hail, Ceasar!
Clooney, Brolin, Tatum, Johansson, Swinton, Fiennes, Hill, Lundgren in a Coen brothers comedy about a kidnapped famous Hollywood actor and the studio’s effort to retrieve him discreetly. The movie had me at Clooney.
19 The Brothers Grimsby
It’s Sacha Baron Cohen and Mark Strong as super-spy, crime-fighting brothers. What could you not like about this?!?!
18 Assassin’s Creed
I don’t even play the game and I’m excited about the film adaptation. If everything I’ve heard about the video game franchise is true (intricate, historically relevant story-telling and loads and loads of underground assassinations), then sign me up!
17 Independence Day: Resurgence
“We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We’re going to live on. We’re going to survive. Today, we celebrate our INDEPENDENCE DAY!”
It’s been 20 years and I STILL remember that soul-rousing speech from President Whitmore! Even though they killed off Will Smith’s Steve Hiller (DAMN IT!), I’m still excited to see Goldblum and Pullman back for more titillating alien escapades.
16 John Wick 2
Going on a one man killing spree just because someone killed your dog is about as stupid badass a movie premise as they come! Especially when you see Keanu Reeves (Neo!) back in the action role he was born to play! I wonder how many he’ll kill this time!
15 Warcraft
Whodathunk that WARCRAFT, of all properties, would get a live-action movie adaptation?!?! Well, sorta live-action, since it’s still going to be riddled with enough CGI to make your head spin. But who cares?? Orcs VS. Humans! Let’s do this!
14 Gambit
Magic Gambit!
Gambit hasn’t even started shooting and it’s already had a fair share of development hell. From shifting directors and writers, to a will-he-or-won’t-he male lead, Gambit better come out with something soon before it starts dropping out of everyone’s most anticipated list.
13 Suicide Squad
I’m not a big fan of the comic or the movie’s initial trailer. But 5 words have kept me from forsaking this film: Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. I can already foresee it, I’m going to completely fall in love with Harley Quinn.
12 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of the Shadows
The first TMNT movie may have had a somewhat lukewarm reception, but Leo, Donnie, Raph and Mikey deserve a second chance. (We owe them that much for practically making our childhoods!) And Arrow’s Stephen Amell as the hockey-themed vigilante Casey Jones might just give the franchise an added dazzle.
I know they're eye-candy, but I'll eat it up anyway!
11 Ghostbusters
Who you gonna call??? The Ghost-f*cking-Busters, that's who! The cult classic is being rebooted for the modern generation and it stars 4 of today’s funniest women! Whether or not this movie’s going to recreate the craze the original Ghostbusters had, you can be sure that at the very least, it’s going to give its humor justice.
10 Now You See Me 2
The first movie was one of 2013’s surprise favorites! Magic creativity in a great heist format gave Now You See Me a unique flavor. And now the 4 Horsemen are back to wreak some more magical havoc AND with one of the most recognizable names in their field at that – HARRY POTTER! Err, I mean, Daniel Radcliff! (How very meta of them!)
9 Star Wars: Rogue One
I heard it’s about the team who stole the Death Star plans from the Empire set between Episodes III and IV. No idea who the characters are or if any of the classic characters are making an appearance…BUT IT’S STAR WARS! After last month’s record-breaking The Force Awakens, I think the whole PLANET is ready for another helping of Star Wars! The pull of the Force is indeed strong at the moment!
8 Star Trek Beyond
Say what you will about Into Darkness, I still loved it! I’ve loved what they’ve done to the franchise since its reboot-non-reboot. The space adventures, the bromance, the drama, the humor – everything’s been on point since the get go. And with Director Justin Lin on the helm of the next installment, you can bet that the already amazing action pieces are gonna get a galactic adrenaline boost!
7 Zoolander 2
Forget the ice cream! The only Magnum you need to remember is Derek Zoolander’s world famous signature look, MAGNUM. It’s so beautiful it can stop a ninja star! And this year, we’re absolutely blessed that we'll have another chance to marvel at Derek Zoolander and Hansel’s flawless splendor! (Bonus: Penelope Cruz joins the cast!)
6 Ip Man 3
Who here is guilty of flailing their arms around pretending to do Wing Chun after watching the first Ip Man? I AM! The franchise that put master martial artist Donnie Yen on the map is now on its third installment and with a match with former heavyweight boxing champ, Mike Tyson, at the horizon, as well as the introduction of this new, relatively unknown character by the name of BRUCE LEE.
5 X-Men: Apocalypse
Olivia Munn as Psylocke is about enough reason for me to get excited about this movie. But if you need more convincing, go and re-watch Days of Future Past. All the reason you need is there.
4 Doctor Strange
My interest in Doctor Strange is part seeing MCU go mystical and part seeing Benedict Cumberbatch as the famed Sorcerer Supreme. Aside from those mind-blowing first images, not much else has been revealed about the November Marvel release. But if you can trust Marvel with anything, it’s taking relatively unknown characters and effortlessly turning them into overnight superstars! (PS. I just realized, we now have TWO Sherlocks in the MCU!)
3 Deadpool
What started out as a parody of a rival company’s character and often confused with Spiderman, Deadpool has gained a well-deserved mainstream notoriety in recent years. The katana-wielding, gun-toting mercenary sets himself apart with his rapid-fire quips and knack for tearing down the fourth wall. The merc with a mouth is sure to make a splash this February in what looks to be a fun romp filled with over-the-top carnage and an endless barrage of that trademark Deadpool humor!
2 Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice
I read somewhere that when Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot came on set in full costume that some of BVS’ producers, crew and other creators freaking CRIED. That’s because BVS Dawn of Justice marks the first time the DC “Trinity” is going to be in the same film together and to a lot of people (myself included), that’s tremendously monumental. That fact alone makes BVS a default top entry on this list! This is history people! HISTORY!
1 Captain America: Civil War
I’m sorry, even though Batman is my all-time favorite superhero, Captain America and Marvel’s track record for producing blockbusters is just too much to ignore. Not to mention that this Cap’s story is based on the comic event that got me started with comics in the first place!
Civil War pits Captain America with his brother-in-arms, Iron Man, in a physical and moral battle. This movie may not have the range of heroes its comic book counterpart had, but if it captures even half of its source’s big, weighty philosophical paradigms and seething emotional resonance, then, my god, Captain America: Civil War is going to be f*cking EPIIIIIIIC!
Some titles that almost made it to the list:
1 Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
2 La La Land
3 The Hateful Eight
4 Dirty Grandpa
5 Sisters
6 Bourne 5
7 The Nice Guys
8 Ride Along 2
9 The 5th Wave
10 Ratchet and Clank
See? I told you. 2016 is packed with waaaaay too much AWESOME!!!! I’m sorry my wallet, you’re in for a turbulent year!
